Ready Player One
Ready Player One was probably one of the books that took me longest to finish, for no apparent reason. The reading was slow, but because the book's plot was more intricate than a lot of other books. Despite this, however, the book was by no means boring. It was action packed, and filled with interesting characters.
This story is about our planet in the year 2044. The earth isn't a good place due to pollution, the environment being destroyed, overpopulation, and more. A gamer called James Haliday creates OASIS, a virtual world, to escape the difficulties our planet is facing. He becomes a multi billionaire, and when he passes away, he designs a game. He says that he has hidden an Easter egg somewhere in OASIS, and the clues as to where to find it, like in his obsession with the 19 century. Anybody who finds the egg first, will have inherit everything he owned.
Five years later, the Easter egg still hasn't been found, and Wade- who goes by Parzival in the world of OASIS- who is a teenager obsessed with this hunt, discovers the first clue. He is soon followed by his best friend Aech, his big time crush Art3mis, Shoto, and Daito. They all prefer to go solo, but in the end, they are forced to work together to stop IOI.
IOI is an organization, often referred to as the Sixers who want to take over the OASIS by winning the hunt, and practically destroying it through the methods in which they want to run it.
Their hatred for IOI deepens when Daito is killed in real life, and Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto's OASIS avatars are killed.
So, to help save OASIS, they all help Parzival win the hunt, and share the prize. They finally meet in person, becoming friends (and Art3mis- whose real name is Samantha- and Wade (or Parzival) fall in love). And actually, Art3mis or Samantha was probably one of my favorite characters by the end of the book, because of her smarts as well as charisma, and I was really happy that she and Wade got together. It made for a really good ending, especially since it showed Wade beginning to open up, and starting an actual life outside of OASIS.
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who is looking for an awesome action packed, well written, teen/ young adult novel. A bonus for you if you like video games, or are into trends from the 19th century, because those two things are mentioned a LOT in this book. I would give this book a rating of 9.2/ 10, and I've heard that there's a movie made based off of it; and even though I haven't watched it, it is on my to- do list.
The Author of this book is Ernest Cline, and Ready Player One is actually his debut novel which is very impressive. He is a novelist, screenwriter, and slam poet. He was born in Ashland, Ohio, on March 29th 1972. Armada is another one of his novels, and I haven't read it, but I will do a review on it, if I do.
