Renegades

One of the most original superhero books I've read is Renegades by Marissa Meyer. I read this book only a few months ago, at my friend's recommendation and immediately fell in love with it. The characters are relatable, the plot is complex, but still clear enough to follow. It's the type of book that drags the reader in and it was the type of book I couldn't put down.

Here's the gist of the story: The renegades are a team of superheroes, who took over after the Age of Anarchy in which superheros who were looking for justice for people with special abilities, such as themselves, began harming people and using unethical means to achieve what they wanted. The renegades took over, killed Ace Anarchy, their leader, who was also Nova's uncle and the only family she had left. She held a grudge against the renegades for not protecting her family when she was young, and she began working for the remainder of Ace Anarchy's followers.
To help them take down the renegades she enters renegade headquarters under a false name, where she meets Adrian. Adria's power is making his drawings come to life, while Nova's power is to make other people fall asleep through her touch. Also, she never sleeps herself. She hides her power to make other's fall asleep, because her alter ego uses that power, and she doesn't want anybody to recognize her.
The two find themselves drawn to each other, but Nova knows that any relationship the have would be based off of a lie. Also, Adrian's alter ego is the Sentinel, who uses tattoo drawings to boost his powers, and defy the renegade's code for good causes. Nova's alter ego is Nightmare who uses her power to put people to sleep to fight the renegades, and almost killed Adrian's father. Both keep their identities a secret, but the Sentinel and Nightmare are enemies, and if their true identities were to get out, Adrian and Nova's relationship, or at the very least friendship, would be ruined.
Besides, Nova is still loyal to Ace Anarchy, but having joined the renegades, she is beginning to see the good in what they do. Her fellow Anarchist, Ingrid, begins to question her loyalty, when she doesn't help her kill Adrian and his team. Ingrid betrays Nova in a plan they were devising, to make Nightmare appear dead so that Nova could continue her undercover work without being under suspicion. Instead of doing this, Ingrid designs a bomb and attempts to kill Nova, so Nova shoots her in the head. Killing her.
I guess that's a pretty long summery, but trust me when I say that this book is worth the read. There is also a second book in the series, Archenemies, which is, to me, just as good as Renegades. And, a third book called Supernova is coming out in a few months.
Marissa Meyer herself is also the author of the Lunar Chronicles, which I will do a review on later as well. She is an American novelist who was born in Washington, and got a degree in creative writing from the Pacific Lutheran University. In my opinion, her greatest skill in writing is how original her books are. Renegades wasn't a stereotypical superhero book, and that was part of the reason I was so drawn to it. If I were to give this book a rating it would be a 9.5 out of  10, and I look forward to reading Supernova when it's released.
Here's the cover of Archenemies, as well as the cover artwork for Supernova:
